AUCTION : 1018

Lot#: 978

DESCRIPTION: Black Forest, Germany, shelf cuckoo, 50 hour, time and strike with cuckoo bird, spring driven wood plate movement in a wood case with oak veneer on molded feet with stepped chamfered base, trimmed with carved fretwork and applied wood ornaments, bone hands and articulated cuckoo bird with carved feathers, applied Roman numeral dial.
CONDITION: The case is in nice condition with an original finish that looks to have been partially cleaned. There are a few veneer cracks, but no significant losses. The knurled brass door knobs are not original. The case has some worm holes along the base. Nicely carved hands and cuckoo bird with carved feather details. This is a spring driven movement without fusees. Both bellows are modern replacements. The brass movement backcock has a distinctive shape. Philipp Haas & Söhne was known to use special shapes for this component. Wood movement plates stamped with Roman numerals for assembly. Whistles have a old brown and white speckled paper. Dial numerals have been given a wash coat of metallic paint, but the effect is not pronounced or aesthetically objectionable.. Stopworks on the backplate are now absent. Brass plates are visible around the winding arbors when viewed from the front.
